Fifty Shades of Blue

Tucson to Parker

Lots of time this morning to sleep in and to chat with Auntie Edna while drinking coffee and watching the finches.  It is a riot to see other birds try to get to the seed which can only be reached by turning upside down to get to the hole UNDER the perch!  After a bit we are visited by a hummingbird!  He hangs around a while and even poses on a branch for us.

Back inside Auntie fixes us bacon and toast with homemade strawberry spread and it's delicious and while we are reveling in the taste treat a small covey of quails marches into the front yard.  It is hard to shoot through the window screen, so we go outside and they immediately head across the street and under a bush.  Auntie crosses the street and slushes them for us!  They are so cute!!

Now begins the process of organizing for the next two weeks, including packing up the coolers with lots of water, much of it frozen, and food which will keep in this heat.  We'll leave some purchases here rather than carry them all across Arizona since we will return to Auntie's house before we fly home, so that helps a bit.  She has been so good to us!!  And she called her buddies at the Golden Nugget in Laughlin and they are comping our dinner and breakfast while we're there!

Doesn't Marilyn look like her Auntie Edna??

Everything is in the car, good-byes are said, and we're off at 12:40, heading to Parker.  It is about a four-hour drive and that's what we have learned is our max in a day.  Tuesday we'll go to Laughlin then on to Vegas.

The landscape changes gradually as the saguaro disappear and a yellow-gold grass becomes dominant.  It looks like mini-wheat!  There is an ozone alert for Maricopa County, through which we are traveling;  but I don't think that's why so many of the mountains are different shades of blue and appear to be smoke or mist covered.

We take a lunch break in the the only piece of shade we've seen, beside a dog park with dinosaur sculptures!  I can't image a dog that would set foot on that hot sand!

In the middle of nowhere there is a huge swathe of green!  I don't know what they are growing or where the water comes from;  but it must cost a fortune!

I just love these blue mountains!

There's a dust devil!!

Isn't this an oxymoron??

Cool power poles!

We make it to Parker almost exactly on schedule and check into the Budget Inn.  And it is aptly named;  but there are two double beds, a kitchen with fridge and microwave, a clean bathroom and two spots for us to sit at our computers.  We turned on the A/C as soon as we entered and after more than two hours it is approaching bearable.  Maybe in another we will be able to sleep.  Luckily we've brought dinner with us and don't have to look presentable at a restaurant!!
